How to Read Your InBody Scan: What Your Body Composition Numbers Actually Mean
Step on a regular scale and you get one number. It goes up, it goes down, and it tells you almost nothing about what is actually happening in your body. An InBody scan tells a much better story. It breaks your weight into muscle, fat, and water, so you can see whether the work you are putting in is paying off where it counts.
At Sasquatch Strength & Nutrition, InBody scans are unlimited with your membership. That means you can check in as often as you want and watch the real numbers move. Here is how to read them.
Why the scale lies to you
Say you train hard for eight weeks, eat well, and the scale hasn’t budged. Frustrating, right? Except you might have added four pounds of muscle and lost four pounds of fat. Same weight, completely different body. The scale would call that a failure. The InBody would show you the win.
This is exactly why we don’t coach the scale. We coach body composition, and the InBody is how we see it clearly.
Skeletal muscle mass (SMM)
This is the number we care about most for people who want to look and feel strong. Skeletal muscle mass is the muscle you can actually train and grow. When this number climbs over time, your metabolism improves, your strength goes up, and your body gets more capable. If you are lifting with progressive overload and eating enough protein, this is the number you want trending up.
Percent body fat
Body fat percentage tells you how much of your weight is fat versus everything else. It is a more honest measure of progress than total weight because it accounts for the muscle you are building. Two people can weigh the same and look completely different depending on this number.
Don’t obsess over hitting a specific percentage overnight. Watch the trend across several scans. Steady, sustainable movement in the right direction beats a crash any day.
Segmental lean analysis
This part of the report breaks your muscle down by body region: left arm, right arm, trunk, left leg, right leg. It shows imbalances. Maybe your right side is carrying more than your left, or your legs are lagging behind your upper body. Your coach uses this to adjust your program so you build in balance instead of reinforcing a weak link.
Body water and phase angle
The InBody also measures total body water and something called phase angle, which reflects cell health and hydration. Big swings here often explain why the scale jumps a few pounds overnight. It is usually water, not fat. Knowing that keeps you from panicking over normal day-to-day fluctuation.
How often should you scan?
Because scans are unlimited with your membership, you have flexibility. For most people, once every two to four weeks is plenty to see a real trend without getting lost in daily noise. Scan under similar conditions each time, same time of day, similar hydration, so you are comparing apples to apples. Your coach will help you read each one and adjust your training and nutrition based on what it shows.
You track your own numbers here. We guide you, correct your form, and push you. The InBody just makes the progress impossible to argue with. Want to learn more about how we structure training around real data? Check out our guide to the Sasquatch strength training approach.
Frequently asked questions
Is an InBody scan accurate?
It is highly consistent, which is what matters for tracking progress over time. As long as you scan under similar conditions each visit, the trend it shows is reliable and useful.
How is an InBody different from a regular scale?
A scale gives you one number, total weight. An InBody breaks that weight into muscle, fat, and water, so you can see whether you are actually losing fat and building muscle.
Are InBody scans really unlimited?
Yes. Every Sasquatch membership includes unlimited InBody scans, so you can check in as often as you and your coach find useful.
Should I be worried if my weight went up but body fat went down?
Usually that is a great sign. It means you gained muscle while losing fat. That is the outcome most people are actually after, even if the scale doesn’t show it.
How soon will I see changes on my scan?
Most people training three times a week and eating well see meaningful movement within four to eight weeks. Muscle and fat change gradually, so trust the trend across several scans.
